Morning Room

This room has been decorated and furnished in the mid-Victorian style. Note the cornice where the colour extends into the ceiling. The damask covering the walls, the drapes and swags are of fabric from the Gainsborough Silk Company and fitted by house staff. Note the corners where no seams or fastenings show. The large birdcage crystal chandelier in the French style is actually English, as are the gilt wood mirrors. The carved marble fire surround is late 18c. The parquetry side cabinet is by Gillows & Co. No. 227. c1860. The Knoll design suite in front of the fireplace has beautiful petite point panels. The magnificent secretaire is northern European, mid 19c.

The oil paintings: Child Portrait with a Dog, from the Scottish school of John Michael Wright, 17c; Girl with Parrot by the Dutch artist Herman Van der Mijn, 17c; Portrait of Geo. Neville, 2nd son of The Earl of Abergavenny; Portrait of  the wife of 2nd Earl of Abergavenny. These last two paintings are by Sir Martin Archer Shee, 19c. and were originally hung in the Gothic Dining Room of Eridge Castle.

The carpet, in high Victorian style, was specially designed for this room by Dr. Rolph and hand woven in Bucharest. The statue group is in white biscuit, mid 19c.
